Eastern Massage Techniques

Reflexology Massage

Reflexology is a form of massage that focuses on the nerve endings in the feet and hands. Each part of the body is represented by a group of nerve endings present in the feet and hands. The reflexologist will massage the part of your foot or hand that will stimulate healing in the parts of your body that need it the most.

The manipulation of these points should unblock the energy flow to those specific body parts, which will help those parts heal according to Asian philosophy.

Stretch Thai Massage

Also known as Yoga Massage, Thai massage is more energizing and rigorous than more classic forms of massage. This technique involves the therapist using his or her hands, knees, legs, and feet to move you into a series of yoga-like stretches. Many people say Thai massage is like doing yoga without any work. Muscle compression, joint mobilization, and acupressure are also used during treatment. People describe Thai massage as both relaxing and energizing.

What to expect during your treatment:

Tui Na Massage

Tui Na dates back to 1700 BC, and is the parent of most modern Asian bodywork forms. Tui Na sessions are a cross between shaitsu and accupresure. Like Shiatsu, Tui Na uses rhythmic compression along energy channels of the body, as well as a variety of techniques that manipulate and lubricate the joints. Like acupressure, Tui Na directly affects the flow of energy by holding and pressing the body at acupressure points. To a Westerner, Tui Na is the form of Asian bodywork most closely resembling conventional western massage.

Reiki Massage

This is a non-invasive method of bodywork using universal life force energy to promote healing. Reiki acts to balance and release blockages on a cellular level within the charkas (subtle energy center) and auric fields. This work can be performed with client clothed or undressed and combined with any other modality.

Shiatsu Massage

Shiatsu is a Japanese form of bodywork. The therapist applies pressure using his or her fingers, thumbs, and/or palms in a continuous rhythmic sequence. The pressure feels more localized, because unlike other types of massage, the finger pads are used to apply pressure for most of the treatment instead of the entire palm. Certain pressure points may feel tender, which some people describe it as "good pain." If you feel any discomfort or pain during the treatment, tell your therapist and he or she will adjust the pressure so that it is comfortable to you. Most people say shiatsu is as relaxing as a classic forms of massage therapy.
